The most frustrating thing for us was trying to find accurate and helpful information that was unbiased. We were being told to "eat low fat food" - yet ignore the chemicals used to replace the fat.
We were potentially poisoning ourselves with chemical substitutes.
As a single parent, I didn't have the time or money to waste on a diet regime that forced you to buy their specific products (shakes, protein powders, snack bars etc), that were only available in certain stores, were heavily processed and full of artificial additives.
Sometimes it just wasn't practical to replace a meal with a shake on a daily basis, or get into town to find the specific products needed.
I had put my own health and wellbeing on a back burner whilst I raised a child, worked full time on my career, and studied part time on an evening. I was burning the candle at both ends trying to make ends meet.
Mentally, I had never been more exhausted and couldn't concentrate for long.
I was 40 years of age, in good health, slightly chunky, but couldn't understand why (despite following the Government's healthy eating advice), I was suffering from aches and pains in my joints if I sat down for more than an hour.
I had aches and pains that I wasn't expecting for another 20 years.
.... it was life changing.
By changing the way we thought about food, and changing our eating, sleeping and exercise habits, we completely changed our health and wellbeing - mind, body and soul.
It's only fair we share our story and what we learned...
As an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant, I had been working on a project for a client that involved poisons. Normally when the body is poisoned, we are naturally sick - the body does what it needs to to expel the toxin from our systems quickly.
It got me thinking: What if the food we're eating is making us ill?
My family lives on a farm and we could see the empty chemical containers strewn around the yard after each crop spraying session. These chemicals are now in our food chain. My thoughts ran to "we are poisoning ourselves, a little bit every day, and our bodies are no longer rejecting it".
A good friend pointed us in the direction of a Paleo lifestyle, and I knew that we just had to try it...
This was the first time we'd tried a "lifestyle change". We managed to save money/reduce our household expenses. The cost of the weekly food shopping bill dropped considerably - even with a teenager in the house. With the Paleo diet being mainly vegetables, herbs & spices, meat, and fish, we only needed to visit a few aisles in the supermarket. Within a couple of weeks, we ditched the supermarkets in favour of local shops. We noticed our money going further than it had before, even with some of the more exotic ingredients. We were fuller for longer and had stopped "snacking" between meals.
This was a most welcome side effect from following a Paleolithic diet. Without doing any additional exercise, we noticed the weight started to come off easily without any extra effort and no expensive gym memberships.
After a few weeks I noticed my belly area had started to shrink and after 10 weeks it had almost gone completely. Excess fat had disappeared, and I could now start working on toning up. I felt much lighter overall and like I actually wanted to exercise.
This was the most unexpected benefit I experienced. Once the detox had been completed, my mind was no longer being subdued by the chemicals in processed foods.
After about 3 weeks I became more focused, more productive, and my mind was clearer and sharper.
My energy levels improved drastically. The mid-afternoon slumps had disappeared, as did the 'brain fog'. My mental health and quality of sleep improved, and I had much more energy.

The Paleo diet has been widely known to improve mental health across multiple studies performed by nutritional psychiatrists. The lifestyle has been known to help patients suffering from depression, ADHD, anxiety and more recently, dementia.
Energy levels are increased through the Paleo meals as they are mainly plant based, and include a range of good fats, plant and animal proteins (although we recommend no more than a palm-sized portion of animal protein with each meal). We created our meal plans to cater for all the family. They were designed to help you gradually transition into the paleo lifestyle. Most of our recipes will consist of familiar ingredients you most likely will have seen and cooked with previously. As the paleo 'diet' dates back to the paleolithic period of hunter-gatherer, the majority of ingredients are easily accessible at your local greengrocer and easy to cook. We've also included some items which might be new to you - just to keep things interesting and many have genuine health benefits which contribute to tasty, nutrient dense, and wholesome meals.
Each recipe has clear instructions setting out the process of the meal you are required to cook. There's also space on some of the recipes to apply your own cooking notes if you feel the need to; such as adding or removing any ingredients you're not a fan of.
Where possible, we recommend you batch cook and store the excess in a freezer until another time.
